Help choosing Jewellery gifts

How to Choose a piece of Jewellery as a gift for someone else

Buying someone a piece of jewellery is not as easy as it sounds. Have you ever been looking online or at a jewellers window and just don’t know where to start? Well you are not alone and hopefully I can give you some ideas on how to go about your search.

Shopping Stress

I am sure you have already seen there is so much choice out there; gold, silver, rose, then there is stone set, sparkly, textured, and there are earrings, bracelets, necklaces or rings. The list goes on and on of things you might have to think about and choose from. Then we worry about what if I pick the wrong thing, then what!?!

Nobody wants you to panic and stress over buying a gift, it should be as stress free as possible and a joy to do it. We should feel excited about seeing the person's face as they open the box and get the first glimpse of their gift, we should be imagining the smile on their face as they try it on for the first time, imagining them wearing it forever more.

So where do we start? Here are a few tips to think about before buying jewellery for someone else.

  • The first thing I always do before I even start looking is to decide what my price range is, how much would I like to spend on this gift, for this person. Perhaps you do not know the cost of jewellery, but really that doesn’t matter at this point. You can spend £10 on a piece of jewellery or £10,000, a huge difference! Knowing your price range first will prevent you from finding something that is completely unexpected and save you being disappointed or feeling like you need to overspend.

  • The second thing I always do before I start looking, is I think about the person I am buying for.

I think: Do they wear jewellery? Are their ears pierced? What does their jewellery look like? The colour? The style, is it sparkly, chunky, simple, delicate? When do they wear their jewellery, all the time, only when going out? What job do they have? Any hobbies?

Seems like a lot of questions right? It is, but this will make picking so much easier, if you know what they wear already and when they wear it you can quickly rule out a lot of things and know what to look out for that is a similar style.

  • When do you imagine them wearing the jewellery you're buying? Is it for special occasions or is it for everyday. The reason this is important is because some jewellery is not designed for everyday wear. It should say in the descriptions how it can be worn and also how to look after it. So this will give you the confidence you are picking something that fits the need as well.

  • If in doubt ask for help, jewellers are super friendly people and we love to help you narrow down what you're looking for. If it’s an online store drop them an email. In person go introduce yourself and let them know what you need.

  • Lastly have a look at the shop's return policies. You want to buy with confidence, and also the reassurance that maybe if you don't get it quite right you can always go back to them and pick something else.

  • Still stuck? you can get a gift voucher and then your present is not only a piece of jewellery, but a day out together choosing the gift. It makes it a whole experience for both of you.

I love jewellery shopping but I get that it can be a maze out there. These are just some of my own thoughts and experiences, there are definitely more out there! Do you have any tips when buying jewellery? Lets share them!
