Net Zero
As part of Memor Jewellerys ethic's I want to put people and planet first. Climate change in its many forms will impact our lives in the future, if it hasn't already. I believe as a business it is my responsibility to make it easier for you to be apart of making a positive climate change whilst you shop.
Since Memor Jewellery's inception I have committed to being a sustainable business and to achieving net zero emissions. I am on a journey to achieve this, and would like to become a net zero company by 2030.
I will honestly say that I am not an expert on sustainability or net zero practices. I am however, fully committed to researching and learning more about how I as an individual and Memor Jewellery as a business can achieve a more sustainable approach and achieve net zero by 2030.
What is net zero / Carbon neutral?
In order to meet the 1.5°C global warming target in the Paris Agreement the UK government has committed to net zero emissions by 2050. This means to help tackle the climate crisis they have agreed to bring all green house emissions under control to net zero. This means putting no more emissions into the atmosphere than you remove.
How will Memor Jewellery become net zero?
As I mentioned above I am no expert on the subject and do not have all of the answers. This is going to be a journey to achieve net zero, I do not know all the steps that are needed over the coming months and years to achieve this target, but Memor will get there.
The Mission - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Offset.
Reduce - The first thing as a business I need to do is analyse every aspect to see if there are areas I can immediately reduce emissions. Some obvious things that can be looked at are; energy provider, type of lightbulbs, type of materials being used etc. If there are reductions in emissions we can make or mitigate them completely by changing practice then those steps will be taken.
Reuse - The second step is to look at things within the business that can be reused, to reduce any further emissions. Some things that can be considered are; leftover materials, order packaging, purchasing 2nd hand for business needs etc. By reusing them and giving them a second life we will cut out any possible further emissions. This will also include me selling on/ gifting on old 'items' to help lower emissions.
Recycle - Once I have analysed all the areas I can reduce and reuse, if there are any leftover materials I will ensure these are then recycled e.g. leftover silver, broken or unrepairable tools etc.
Offsetting - Once all areas of the business have been looked into there may be emissions I can not reduce, this might be as they are out of my direct control e.g. suppliers. For example if I feel I have chosen the best supplier with the best ethical/eco policy and there are still some emissions from this that I could reduce no further, then I will look into offsetting these emissions.
It will be important to continue analysing the business frequently to see if in the future with changes in technology I could make better choices, further reducing carbon emissions.
Some actions we have had in place or have updated and are currently low or no emission choices are as follows:
Current actions:
- Renewable energy supplier - Pure Planet only supplying energy from sun, wind and water, any gas used is 100% offset.
- Packaging sourced from a supplier that uses only certified FSC resources including the inserts to boxes. Using recycled ribbon and tissue papers.
- Only printing when it is essential. I am not issuing paper receipts, your whole transaction is digital.
- Using Recycled silver and recycling any that can not be utilised immediately so it can be reused again.
- Limiting use of power tools and electrical equipment and ensuring if I am not using it, it is completely turned off at the power source.
- Energy efficient lightbulbs are in use.
- Soon to be renovating my workspace, to make it more heat efficient. I am looking into eco options for flooring, lighting etc I will share the progress of this as it begins.
- Display units are made from either recycled materials or FSC certified wood.
This list will be updated regularly so you can track Memor Jewellerys progress.
